The Los Angeles Council of Charitable Gift Planners holds four General Meetings each year. Our General Meetings are like attending a half-day conference on gift planning. Attendees benefit from hearing two different presentations at either the beginner or advanced level. Come learn the latest concepts and techniques to help your donors or clients make planned gifts that meet their financial and philanthropic goals. Sessions may include facilitated breakouts so you can engage with your fellow attendees.

Morning Session

Is Your Gift Up for Grabs? Avoiding the Risk of Forfeiture Following the Breslin Case

The California Court of Appeal's decision in Breslin v. Breslin provides that a party to a trust proceeding who receives notice of a court-ordered mediation may be bound by the result. This may not seem troubling at first, but in the year since this decision, charities are increasingly getting "Breslined" when other parties and heirs seek to "grab" the charity's gift or interest in a trust. This session will review the Breslin case with a focus on the key takeaways and strategies for charities who wish to protect their interests in trusts and eliminate the risk of gift forfeiture. If your charity receives gifts from trusts, this session is a must for you!

Elizabeth Bawden is a partner in the Trusts, Estates and Charitable Planning Team at Withers Bergman LLP. She regularly represents charities in their planned giving programs, providing them with advice and counsel in structuring unique and complex gifts, and in navigating the (sometimes) rocky waters of post-gift administration. Elizabeth also works with individual donors in structuring and establishing planned gifts. She is a past-president of LACGP, and serves on the board of the Heifer International Foundation whose mission is to support the work of Heifer International in ending hunger and poverty and caring for the earth.

Susanna Kim is an attorney in the Trusts, Estates and Charitable Planning Team at Withers Bergman LLP. She represents clients in estate planning and trust administration matters, and routinely drafts charitable lead trusts, charitable remainder trusts, and other vehicles to achieve client's charitable goals. Susanna volunteers with Mentor for Change, an LA based nonprofit with a mission to unlock the potential in every youth through career-based mentoring.

A Comparison and Contrasting of Donor Advised Funds and Private Foundations

A discussion of the similarities and differences between donor advised funds and private foundations, and how individuals and families can fulfill their philanthropic goals with the use of a donor advised fund. 

As Director of Planned Giving at the California Community Foundation, Stephanie Hsieh serves individuals, families and businesses as a charitable planning advisor. She works with donors of various backgrounds and coordinates with their professional advisors to plan for and achieve their philanthropic goals. Stephanie specializes in facilitating gifts of non-cash assets, converting appreciated illiquid assets into philanthropic dollars, which donors can then use to support organizations and cause that they chose.

Stephanie earned her Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of California, Berkeley and her Juris Doctorate from University of Southern California Gould School of Law. While in law school, Stephanie served as the president of the Asian Pacific American Law Student Association and received a Public Interest Law Foundation Grant to work for Public Counsel.

Before joining CCF, Stephanie left a successful career as an estate planning and tax attorney to pursue her life passion of nonprofit work. With more than 15 years of professional development experience, Stephanie recently served as the Senior Executive Director of Development for USC Norris Comprehensive Cancer Center, overseeing all development operations at USC Norris.

Mini Round Table

Moderated by Jay Harvill

The mini round table is intended as a space for those with less than 3 years of experience to be able to engage actively with gift planning topics, ask questions, and share challenges they've been facing so they can gain insight from others facing similar issues as well as seasoned planned giving officers.

Jay A. Harvill
Director of Gift Planning, Methodist Hospital
Jay is the Director of Gift Planning at Methodist Hospital Foundation and has been leading the organization’s gift and estates program since 2005. He came to the non-profit world from a career in banking and has been enjoying his time in the charitable field for the past 25 years. Jay is an active member of the Los Angeles Council of Charitable Gift Planners and has been since 1996. Jay served on its board, later as president, hosted its Advanced Case Study, and currently is its moderator for the chapter’s Mini Round Table. Over the years, Jay continued to participate in various committees with both the Western Regional Planned Giving Conference and National Philanthropy Day. Jay has also served on the boards of Arcadia Rotary Club and San Gabriel Valley Habitat for Humanity. At the hospital, Jay serves as a member of the No One Dies Alone (NODA) and Clinical Pastoral Education programs. Jay graduated from Pepperdine University Seaver College and through today, continues to study finance, charitable planning, and legislative trends in order to best serve his organization and donor relationships. Jay and his family enjoy serving the needy in his local area as well as through mission trips abroad. On the weekends, you can find Jay catching up on books on American history, woodworking, or hiking the local San Gabriels.

In accordance with the Pasadena Public Health Department, masks are required for all individuals inside of the Club, regardless of vaccination status. Attendees without masks will be provided a mask. Masks can be removed when actively eating and drinking. Exemptions to mask requirements can be made in certain instances in accordance with California Department of Public Health. Cancellation Policy
LACGP regrets that refunds will not be given for no-shows. A refund of full registration is permitted prior to an event by submitting a written request to [email protected].

LACGP reserves the right to change speakers and/or cancel an event due to unforeseen circumstances without penalty. The total amount of any liability of LACGP will be limited to a refund of the attendee’s registration fee.

The information provided to program partners and exhibitors will only be used to inform the attendee of promotions and networking opportunities with the program partners and exhibitors at the event. Attendee information is never given to any other parties. LACGP does not sell attendee information. For those LACGP events with program partners/exhibitors, you will have the option during registration to choose whether you wish to receive notifications and opportunities from the program partners/exhibitors via email or mail.

Continuing Education
The Los Angeles Council of Charitable Gift Planners is approved as continuing education provider #3889 of MCLE credit by the State Bar of California and designated this activity for a maximum of 2.0 hours of credit. LACGP is also approved for CFRE continuing education credits. Full participation in the General Meeting is applicable for 2.0 points in Category 1.B – Education of the CFRE International application for initial certification and/or recertification. An application for continuing education credits for CFP® is submitted when the course content is within the CFP® Board guidelines.

Continuing Professional Education (CPE) credits for CPAs through the California Board of Accountancy are self-reported and it is the obligation of each licensee to select a course of study consistent with CBA requirements.

Certified Specialist in Planned Giving (CSPG) continuing education credits for Planned Giving are self-reported and the appropriate attendance certificate will be provided after the event.
